Getting Alterations in Birmingham, AL

Tailoring and alterations are words that are thrown around a lot in Birmingham, AL when discussing garments. While some people might use them interchangeably, they actually mean two different things. Here’s the difference between tailoring and alterations:

Alterations Near Me Birmingham 35242Tailoring refers to a garment that is custom-fitted for the wearer. Of course, since the garment is custom-fit, it looks really, really good on the person it was made for. Tailoring often comes at a price here in Birmingham if you can’t do it yourself, but it is absolutely worth it because of the huge difference it makes in the look and fit of your clothes.

If you want to learn how to tailor your own clothes (and look at your wardrobe in a whole new way!), there are classes around Birmingham that will teach you how to make custom-fit clothes for yourself. In The Classic Tailored Shirt with Pam Howard, you’ll make a crisp, tailored shirt that you can return to over and over again as you build your wardrobe.

Once you have the perfect shirt, you’ll need the perfect-fitting pants to go with it: Pant Fitting Techniques with Sandra Betzina will address common fit issues and help you to sew a pair of pants that fit and flatter like nothing you’ll find on a rack in the whole state of Alabama!

Of course, if you’d prefer to start with tailoring clothes you already own versus sewing new ones, there’s also Tailoring Ready-to-Wear with Angela Wolf, which shows you how to achieve custom-fit with clothing you’ve purchased off the rack.

Alterations are less extensive changes to the garment that also change the way the garment fits, and are usually focused on one particular fit area. There are lots of places around the 35242 zip code of Birmingham where you can go if you want someone to do it for you.  It could be as simple as taking up the hem on a pair of pants or shortening a sleeve. Alterations are less intimidating to attempt on your own, and many times you can alter the garment before you even make it” by altering the pattern.

Sew the Perfect Fit with Lynda Maynard will show you how to determine fit issues and adjust a muslin directly on your body. Most people do not match the measurements that patterns are fit to, so knowing how to alter patterns will make a huge difference in the final fit of the garment and how you look, no matter the season or the local weather!

If you’re a special body type, it’s worth it to learn about more specialized alteration techniques. Plus-sized women will find Plus-Size Pattern Fitting and Design with Barbara Deckert extremely useful, as the class covers everything from pattern alteration to design considerations and fabric suggestions. There are many of us who at one point had the need of receiving some type of correction to an article of clothing at a local alteration or tailor shop without understanding the difference in services. An alteration is a minor modification or change where an adjustment is made to an article of clothing. Tailoring is to adapt an article of clothing on a minor to major scale to be able to meet fashion needs or tastes.

Although these two processes are similar – to tailor something is more encompassing than to simply alter something. An alteration would fall under the act of tailoring but a tailored piece also includes more complicated tasks that only a skilled person is capable of doing. An alteration would include more simple tasks such as hemming or shortening of pants, adjusting the waist line of a garment, or tapering – just to name a few. These duties are simple sewing tasks which does not required a high level of experience.

Getting something tailored would include the aforementioned acts but also include more complex tasks and therefore require a higher skill set. Tailoring includes such things as refitting a garment, adding style attributes that did not previously exist such as a collar, cuffs, or pockets, and other more complex sewing tasks.

It’s a fine line in trying to distinguish between the two but perhaps the best way to separate them is to realize that alterations are all the simple tasks of tailoring that does not required any significant experience to accomplish and can be quickly taught and learned. A tailor can do it all while someone who is only skilled enough to do alterations should not and cannot legitimately be called a tailor. Hopefully we can go out into the world being a little more knowledgeable about this topic and better appreciate the craft of a custom tailor.  –  Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/4814337
